Australia holds a special place in my heart, having visited twice—first as a 19-year-old in 1989, and later in 2011 with my three children. The latter trip was a month-long journey filled with unforgettable experiences, unexpected detours, and the breathtaking beauty of the Land Down Under.

When we first arrived in Melbourne, we visited friends in the suburbs and more in Leongatha near Phillip Island where the penguins frolic in the ice-cold waters.​

✈️ The Journey Continues: Melbourne to Sydney by Car

Our adventure took an unexpected turn when a volcanic eruption in Chile sent an ash cloud over Melbourne, grounding flights across Australia, including ours to Uluru. This disruption was part of a larger event that affected thousands of travelers in Australia and New Zealand . Undeterred, we rented a car and embarked on a road trip to Sydney, turning a setback into an opportunity to explore more of the country.

Needless to say, I was exhausted after driving 12 hours across a repetitive landscape of sheep and hills over and over again. The children, ages 11, 11, and 7, were angels and took the trip in stride.​

🌆 Sydney: Urban Exploration and Cultural Delights

Sydney welcomed us with its iconic landmarks—the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The city's vibrant culture and beautiful beaches provided a perfect backdrop for family adventures. From exploring local markets to enjoying coastal walks, Sydney offered a blend of urban excitement and natural beauty.​

🐠 Port Douglas: Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

Next, we ventured to Port Douglas, a charming coastal town known for its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. Here, we indulged in snorkeling excursions, marveling at the diverse marine life and vibrant coral formations. Port Douglas also offered lush rainforests and a relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for both adventure and relaxation.

🏜️ Uluru: The Heart of Australia's Red Centre

Our plans to visit Uluru were disrupted, a majestic sandstone monolith. Standing 348 meters high, Uluru is not only a natural wonder but also a site of deep cultural significance to the Anangu people. Exploring the surrounding landscapes and learning about the area's rich Aboriginal heritage were greatly missed. Maybe we'll make it back there one day.
