Ever heard of Andorra? It’s a tiny country tucked between France and Spain, hidden high up in the Pyrenees Mountains. Think: alpine charm, cobblestone streets, and fresh mountain air. ποΈ It's a place that feels like Vail, Colorado — but with a European twist, and every building crafted from the same local stone so it all blends together like a painting. π¨
Here’s the story of how we “camped” in the middle of this magical micro-nation and why it deserves a spot on your travel list.
π A Wild Night Camping in the Capital (Yes, Really)
Our journey started in Barcelona, Spain, where we flew in and explored for a bit. From there, we stayed overnight in a cozy farmhouse north of the city. But the real adventure began when we drove straight into Andorra la Vella, the capital of Andorra—and set up camp. ποΈ
And by “camp,” I mean:
-
We pulled our rental car into an empty grassy field smack in the center of the city
-
Paid €20 for the spot
-
Pitched a tent right there on the lawn
-
And yes... we plugged our tiny coffee maker into the car’s cigarette lighter for our morning brew βπ
The campsite had a bathhouse for showers and basic amenities. It was simple, but the views of the surrounding peaks made it feel five-star. π
ποΈ Exploring Andorra la Vella
After setting up camp, we had time to wander around the capital — which, fun fact, is the highest capital city in Europe at 1,023 meters above sea level. It's a blend of old-world charm and modern vibes.
Don’t miss:
-
π Santa Coloma Church – one of the oldest in the country
-
πβοΈ Caldea Spa – Southern Europe’s largest thermal spa
-
ποΈ Duty-free shopping along Meritxell Avenue
π΄βοΈ The Tour de France Connection
Andorra’s winding roads are no joke — which is why it’s a regular stop on the Tour de France. We didn’t stay long (just that one camping night), because we were off the next morning to follow the race route and catch Lance Armstrong during the era he was dating Sheryl Crow. Talk about a time capsule! π
